In Nederland hebben we, zo even uit de losse pols, Michael Tedja, Gillion Grantsaan en Avery Preesman. Op de kunstacademie hadden we Patricia en Sheila, die geen kunst maakte maar grafisch vormgever werd. Vroeger had je Jean-Michel Basquiat, Stanley Brouwn en, ik heb het ook maar van horen zeggen, de Cobra-kunstenaar Ernest Mancoba. Natuurlijk mogen we Chris Ofili niet vergeten. En Marlene Dumas komt uit Zuid-Afrika maar is gewoon wit. Ze zijn op één hand te tellen, zwarten in de kunst. Artnet's anders zo vileine Charlie Finch neemt het voor ze op:

"Exactly two African-American artists, David Hammons and Kara Walker, do anything on the auction market. Lorna Simpson, for all her grace and style, is a bit too obscurely uptown for the auctionites, and Martin Puryear, arguably the finest sculptor working in the U.S. today, would be a superstar if he were white. How do we explain, in 2003, such apartheid?"
