Het Britse Wales vond dat het iets aan zijn culturele imago moest doen en riep onder de naam 'Artes Mundi' een prestigieuze prijs in het leven, die deze week voor het eerst werd uitgereikt. Op de shortlist stonden namen als Fiona Tan,
Kara Walker en Jane Antoni, maar de prijs werd gewonnen door de Chinese kunstenaar Xu Bing, die speciaal voor de gelegenheid een kunstwerk maakte van het stof dat hij op 11 september 2001 verzamelde op Ground Zero:

"His installation 'Where does the dust collect itself?' was especially made for the Artes Mundi Prize contest. He covered the museum's floor with the dust he had collected from the 11 September 2001 terror attacks in New York. The surface of the settled dust was then punctuated by the Chinese verse "As there is nothing from the first, where does the dust collect itself?"
