In 1946 maakt Marcel Duchamp 'Paysage fautif', een onderdeel van de 'Boîte-en-Valise' die de kunstenaar aan zijn Braziliaanse minnares en muze voor 'Étant donnés' Maria Martin schonk. 'Paysage fautif' is een abstracte afbeelding op celluloid en zwart satijn en stelde kunsthistorici voor raadsels omdat het werk zo un-Duchampian gevonden werd (waarop David Hockney reageerde met de opmerking "It’s not in the spirit of Duchamp to be Duchampian"). Pas tientallen jaren later ontdekten wetenschappers via DNA-onderzoek dat het werk gemaakt is met Duchamp's eigen sperma:

"The matter and the meaning of Paysage fautif, a raised drawing, made on a fluid material over black velvet, was always a mystery to critics and researchers, until, in 1989, as a result of an exhibit in Houston, Texas, it was discovered that the material used was sperm, probably Duchamp’s own. Paysage fautif, was therefore an homage to the woman that the artist loved but whom he could not marry, because she had chosen to remain as the wife of the Ambassador Carlos Martins."
